Fatty Seeds – Chinese Chive (Garlic Chives)
Chinese Chive, also known as Garlic Chives, is a popular aromatic herb known for its long, flat green leaves and distinctive mild garlic flavour. Commonly used in stir-fries, dumplings, soups and other Asian dishes, it adds a fresh and fragrant taste to everyday meals. Easy to grow and maintain, Chinese Chive is suitable for growing in pots or garden beds, making it ideal for home gardening.
Planting Guidelines:
-
Sow the seeds in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil, approximately 0.5–1cm deep. Once the seedlings are established, space the plants 5–10cm apart to allow sufficient room for healthy growth.
-
Seeds typically germinate within 7–14 days. The leaves can generally be harvested in approximately 60–90 days once the plants are well-established. Cut the leaves a few centimetres above the soil surface to encourage fresh regrowth and repeated harvesting.
-
Chinese Chive grows best in full to partial sunlight, preferably receiving at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Ensure good drainage and adequate airflow to promote healthy leaf production.
