Fatty Seeds – Cos Lettuce (Romaine Lettuce)
Cos Lettuce, also known as Romaine Lettuce, is a popular leafy vegetable known for its long, upright green leaves, crisp texture and mild, slightly sweet flavour. Commonly used in Caesar salads, sandwiches, wraps and other fresh dishes, it is a refreshing and nutritious addition to everyday meals. Suitable for growing in pots or garden beds, Cos Lettuce is a great choice for home vegetable gardens.
Planting Guidelines:
-
Sow the seeds in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil, covering them lightly with approximately 0.3–0.5cm of soil. Space the plants 20–30cm apart to allow sufficient room for healthy growth and head formation.
-
Seeds typically germinate within 7–14 days, and the plants can be ready for harvesting in approximately 50–70 days. Harvest the entire plant once the leaves are well-developed, or pick the outer leaves while leaving the centre intact for continued growth.
-
Cos Lettuce grows best in cooler conditions with partial sunlight. In Singapore's warm climate, morning sunlight with afternoon shade is recommended to reduce heat stress. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Excessive heat may cause early flowering and bitter leaves.
