Fatty Seeds – Sweet Corn
Sweet Corn is a popular vegetable known for its juicy, tender kernels and naturally sweet flavour. Commonly enjoyed steamed, boiled, grilled or added to soups and salads, it is a delicious addition to home-cooked meals. Thriving in warm climates like Singapore, Sweet Corn is suitable for growing in spacious garden beds with plenty of sunlight.
Planting Guidelines:
-
Sow the seeds directly into well-draining, nutrient-rich soil, approximately 2–3cm deep. Space the plants 20–30cm apart, with sufficient room between rows. Plant in blocks of several rows rather than a single row to encourage better wind pollination and kernel development.
-
Seeds typically germinate within 4–7 days, and the corn can be ready for harvesting in approximately 70–100 days, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Harvest when the silk turns brown and the kernels are plump and release a milky liquid when gently pressed.
-
Sweet Corn grows best in full sunlight, preferably receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during flowering and cob development. Ensure sufficient nutrients and good drainage to support healthy growth.
