Fatty Seeds – Tatsoi
Tatsoi, also known as Asian Spinach or Spoon Mustard, is a fast-growing leafy vegetable known for its dark green, spoon-shaped leaves and tender stems. With its mild, slightly mustard-like flavour, it is commonly used in salads, stir-fries, soups and other Asian dishes. Suitable for growing in pots or garden beds, Tatsoi is a great choice for home gardening.
Planting Guidelines:
-
Sow the seeds directly into well-draining, nutrient-rich soil, covering them lightly with approximately 0.5–1cm of soil. Space the plants 15–25cm apart to allow sufficient room for healthy growth.
-
Seeds typically germinate within 5–10 days. Young leaves can be harvested in approximately 20–30 days, while mature plants are generally ready in 40–50 days. Harvest the outer leaves regularly while leaving the centre intact to encourage continuous growth.
-
Tatsoi grows best in cooler conditions with partial sunlight, especially in Singapore's warm climate. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense afternoon sunlight, as excessive heat may cause early flowering.
