Fatty Seeds – Thai Basil
Thai Basil is a popular aromatic herb known for its glossy green leaves, purple stems and distinctive sweet, slightly spicy flavour with hints of anise. Commonly used in Thai curries, stir-fries, soups and Vietnamese dishes, it adds a rich and fragrant taste to everyday meals. Thriving in Singapore's warm tropical climate, Thai Basil is suitable for growing in pots or garden beds, making it ideal for home herb gardens.
Planting Guidelines:
-
Sow the seeds in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil, approximately 0.5cm deep. Space the plants 20–30cm apart to allow sufficient room for healthy growth.
-
Seeds typically germinate within 5–10 days, and the leaves can be ready for harvesting in approximately 45–70 days. Harvest the leaves and tender stems regularly once the plant is well-established. Pinch off the growing tips to encourage bushier growth and remove flower buds to maintain leaf production.
-
Thai Basil grows best in full sunlight, preferably receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Water regularly, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between watering sessions. Ensure good drainage and adequate airflow to promote healthy growth.
