Spinach needs regular watering, especially in dry weather. Water frequently but in small amounts, and avoid waterlogging. Spinach needs about 1–1.5 inches of water per week. 

Add a thick layer of mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and deter weeds. 

Keep the area around your spinach free of weeds so that the young plants don't have to compete for water or light. 

In hot weather, provide temporary shade to prevent the soil from drying out and the spinach from bolting (running to seed). 

If you're growing hardy varieties for overwintering, cover them with fleece or cloches from October onwards. If you're growing spinach in containers, move them into a greenhouse, coldframe, or bright porch before the cold weather sets in. 

Start harvesting outer leaves when there are 6 leaves on the plant, which is about 30 days after seeding. You can continue harvesting individual leaves until the weather warms and the plants bolt. 

To protect your spinach from snails and slugs, you can use beer traps or Defender Snail & Slug Pellets. To protect from animals, you can use wildlife-friendly white netting.
