$29.90

Chinese Mustard is a resilient crop that is great for beginners. Both its leaves and seeds pack a spicy kick, which make them relatively pest resilient and an interesting vegetable to grow in your edible garden. Leaves can be eaten raw in salads or added to soup, and sprouted seeds are eaten as microgreens.

Here are some tips for caring for Chinese mustard:
  • Sunlight
Chinese mustard grows best in full sun or partial shade, with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight or 6 hours of indirect sunlight.

  • Soil
Chinese mustard prefers well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. You can add aged compost to the planting bed before planting.

  • Watering
Chinese mustard needs consistent moisture, especially during dry periods.Overwatering and underwatering can both cause yellow leaves.

  • Fertilizing
You can feed Chinese mustard with a fertilizer high in nitrogen.

  • Planting
Sow seeds individually in a seedling tray, and transplant seedlings into pots or the ground when they have 4 or more leaves. Space plants 10–20 cm apart.

  • Harvesting
Harvest Chinese mustard when the leaves are young and tender, usually around a month after sowing. You can pick individual leaves or cut the entire plant.

  • Pests and diseases
Common pests include flea beetles, cabbage worms, and aphids. You can prevent infestations with a floating row cover while the plants are young. Chinese mustard is fairly resistant to diseases, but you can rotate crop locations and alternate with non-Brassica crops to avoid soil-borne pathogens.
