Local Chye Sim, commonly used in Chinese cuisine, is a leafy vegetable that has slender and smooth stems and broad flat green leaves. It has a milder flavor and goes well when it is stir-fried with garlic.

As with most vegetables, Chye Sim thrive optimally in fertile, loose and well-drained soil with good water retention. For optimal plant nutrition, add compost and/or mulch occasionally to replenish nutrient levels in soil; or apply a small amount of organic fertiliser every 1-2 weeks for optimal growth.

Here are some tips for caring for chye sim, also known as choy sum: 
  • Temperature
    Low temperatures (15°C to 25°C) promote strong stalks and increase sweetness. 

  • Soil
    Chye sim can adapt to a wide range of soil types but prefers fertile and well-drained soils. 

  • Watering
    Chye sim can tolerate moderate water deficit but is susceptible to waterlogging. 

  • Harvesting
    To harvest the whole head, harvest from the base at week 5. 

  • Storage
    Vacuum-packed chye sim can be stored in the chiller for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 1 month. Once opened, consume within 3 to 4 days. 

  • Nutrition
    Chye sim is a leafy vegetable that’s an excellent source of vitamin C and vitamin K.
