Seedlings : Green Spinach

$29.90

Green Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) contains so many vitamins and antioxidants that it’s no wonder it is often labelled a superfood (just ask Popeye). This leafy green is easy to grow in the veggie patch or pots but needs to be grown quickly to maintain tenderness and better flavour. Steam it, stir fry it or add it to your favourite soups, salads and savoury dishes. Yum!

Here are some tips for caring for green spinach:
  • Watering
Spinach needs regular watering, especially in dry weather. Water frequently but in small amounts, and avoid waterlogging. Spinach needs about 1–1.5 inches of water per week.

  • Mulching
Add a thick layer of mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and deter weeds.

  • Weeding
Keep the area around your spinach free of weeds so that the young plants don’t have to compete for water or light.

  • Protecting from hot weather
In hot weather, provide temporary shade to prevent the soil from drying out and the spinach from bolting (running to seed).

  • Protecting from winter
If you’re growing hardy varieties for overwintering, cover them with fleece or cloches from October onwards. If you’re growing spinach in containers, move them into a greenhouse, coldframe, or bright porch before the cold weather sets in.

  • Harvesting
Start harvesting outer leaves when there are 6 leaves on the plant, which is about 30 days after seeding. You can continue harvesting individual leaves until the weather warms and the plants bolt.

  • Protecting from pests
To protect your spinach from snails and slugs, you can use beer traps or Defender Snail & Slug Pellets. To protect from animals, you can use wildlife-friendly white netting.
